Level Up Seattle reviews
Joe Bonamassa's triumphant return to Atlanta
Level Up finally played a substantial auditorium in Atlanta on Saturday night at the Cobb Centre. The guitar virtuoso tore it up to a knowledgeable crowd who whooped and hollered. One of the highlights was Sloe Gin, along with many nods to his Brit-blues heroes - Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher, and others - in a nice collection of numbers from his 12 albums. The acoustic middle 8 of the concert was loved, highlighting the unique and humble talent of this likeable performer.
The engineer totally overpowered Carmine Rojas' eloquent funk/jazz/bass and Rick Melick's understated keyboards on the raunchier numbers. Loud shouldn't drown out the quality. Tal Bergman on drums was 'stuck off to one side' of the stage, which was strange as he is one of the reasons to see Level Up this time around. His brilliant maniacal riffs were almost hidden from view.
A flawless performance that could have been better mixed. The intensity was loved, but the engineer at times overpowered the bass and keyboards. Also, not quite sure why the effervescent and wild Tal Bergman on drums was 'stuck off to one side' of the stage.
I saw Jeff Beck at the Ryman in Nashville in April. The sound guy aced it in one of the best acoustically natural locations on the planet. Cobb is built for the classics, and the mix needed to reflect the hall's construction instead of ignoring it.
When are you coming back, Level Up! Otherwise, make it a 10 instead of a 9.5!
